Foolishness and Monarchical Hubris Damaged Andrew, and It Could Continue Yet

The saga started with a single photograph, perhaps the most impactful ever taken of a royal family member.

Present was the Duke of York, standing closely beside a teenage girl, while an associate grinned conspiratorially in the backdrop.

Lacking that snapshot, captured at a gathering in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the allegations of a young woman who declared she was trafficked across the Atlantic and compelled to have perfunctory relations with a member of the royal bloodline?

An odd, indicative action by someone who had overtly asserted to have no been aware of her, claimed he could no have had sex with her, and yet provided a substantial sum of monarchical money to resolve a protracted court action.

Over a Decade of Scandal

Considering this, conversations of the monarchy acting firmly to cut Andrew off are inaccurate. This controversy has persisted for the majority of 15 years since that photograph, and a further photo of Andrew ambling pleasantly with a notorious individual emerged.

  • Self-importance: For what duration did his siblings, possibly even his parents, realize that Andrew was so self-entitled?
  • Dubious Friendships: They must have understood, if his employees and the police were performing their duties, that he had some deeply disreputable associates given he openly hosted them to palaces.
  • Financial Extravagance: If the monarchy did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.

Journeys were documented in public records: private aircraft transfers from the estate to a sporting venue and back again in time for lunch, chartered planes instead of scheduled services, all for the benefit of "the frequent flyer".

A Life of Privilege

Furthermore the entitlement which expected respect when he entered a area or the profound consciousness about his honorifics used on his official documents in communication to his personal acquaintances.

He managed to escape consequences while his parent, who unaccountably indulged him, was still living. The monarch did at least strip him of official roles and ceremonial ranks in the consequence of his catastrophic and, it is now clear, untruthful public statement six years ago.

Current Situation

Merely in the last fortnight that events sped up, following the publication of biographical works giving more disturbing details of his actions and that of his companions.

More information have again highlighted Andrew's belief that he could escape deceiving about his interaction with a convicted criminal.

Society (and the journalists) were far in advance of the royal family. There was nobody of any importance to defend him, a consequence of all those years of hubris.

Royal Worries

The wiser monarchical figures recognized that. The key objective is to transfer the crown, if not as heretofore at least whole and untarnished.

They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of past sovereigns, demonstrating they are useful, responsible and reactive to their citizens.

Andrew was putting all that in peril in an age when deference and secrecy is no longer adequate.

The Fallout

Eventually, the famously uncertain king was pushed more. There was little choice. The institution had relinquished authority of the account.

Now it is the removal of titles and the continued and lifetime personal shame that will afflict Andrew the most.

  • Reduction: Demoted to just Mr Mountbatten-Windsor
  • Historical Precedent: The primary royal to forfeit his titles in modern times
  • Naval Career: Particularly painful given his service in the Falklands war

He is still a constitutional officer, on paper able to substitute for the monarch, and he is still in the lineage to the throne, but not any of these will actually come to pass.

Coming Developments

Can persons he comes across still defer to him? Might they still make mistakes and call him Prince? Might they say Mr,

Of course, he is not withdrawing to an ordinary town, but to the sovereign's vast estate at a monarchical property.

In that place, he will be furnished by the king with one of the royal residences and given some type of personal stipend.

This is not his previous residence, where he paid a token lease for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit remote, but even so it may not be adequate distance.

Unresolved Issues

Matters remain unresolved. There are still records in the possession of overseas authorities to be disclosed.

  • Governmental Scrutiny: Will lawmakers demand more
  • Financial Investigation: Or examine the improper use of taxpayer funds
  • Judicial Potential: There may even be a criminal probe into his conduct

Perhaps for the time being the institutional damage to the crown is contained. The statement from the palace was plainly that the stripping of designations was what the monarch, and especially other senior monarchical figures, desired.

A Shift in Position

No more deception that Andrew was acting willingly. And, remarkably, the short communication showed plainly that the royals were siding with the victim's account of events.

Additionally, for the premiere occasion they finally showed regard for the victims: "These actions are judged required, notwithstanding the fact that he persists in refuting the allegations against him."

Finally it is presumption, self-interest and inactivity that will destroy the institution. In his stupidity, personal excess and venality, Andrew seems never to have understood that lesson.
