NSW police have issued a fine against an American social media personality and served two driving violation citations for alleged reckless operation following a swarm of e-bike riders converged on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday.

The Event: An Illegal Gathering

A gathering of approximately 40 people operating e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders then turned around and traveled through the downtown area and Haymarket.

"There was a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on Wednesday.

Law enforcement indicated they did not immediately pursue the riders out of safety concerns but instead located the assembly at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the city gardens, at which point they broke up.

Penalties Issued for Influencer

On Saturday, authorities stated they had issued the US social media influencer known as the influencer, 26, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a fine of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer reportedly has over 3.4 million followers on one platform and over 1.2 million on the social media app.

Creator's Response

The online figure gave comments to a local publication this week following the event spread rapidly on news sites and social media, stating he was sorry for giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I’ll probably take responsibility. It was one of the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, so I’m going to come here respecting the rules and standards of Sydney. When I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to greet people under the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had a decision to make: whether the group rides the full length of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we reverse, basically, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."

National Debate on Electric Bike Rules

The spate of e-bikes on roads nationwide has prompted growing calls for stricter rules. The federal health minister, the minister, recently said that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Young people have engaged in stupid things on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are truly severe," the minister said. "We’ve got to ensure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] officers are granted the powers to crack down, to confiscate them, to crush them, to dispose of them."

The state reported 226 injuries associated with ebikes in 2024. But, in the first seven months of the following year, that figure jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
